The background - A geophysical crew (in orange) doing borehole electromagnetics from the 6800' level of the Kidd Creek mine; mining company chaperone in grey. Among the hoses on the rock face in the background are loudly hissing methane suckers to remove methane coming up the borehole being used. Huge ventilation fans also roar in the distance. This is definitely a noisy environment. It is also hot and damp. The puddles on the ground are water which has leached through a sulphide ore body, and has a very low pH. Drop a wire in the puddle, and it will short circuit to ground. Reach in with bare hands to retrieve it and your hand will sting.

Geophysical equipment has to be very robustly designed to work reliably in environments like this.

Note that geophysical exploration is also done in quite pleasant and scenic locations.
