PHY100S - The Magic of Physics - Class 22 - Tuesday March 28, 2006

Announcement

I have extensively revised the Course Notes which we used in conjunction with the text's treatment of Quantum Entanglement. The new version went up this morning. Linked to from an earlier class, here are those links again:

The section on spin has been expanded, and a new section, More Boxes, has been added. This new section will not be discussed in class, and is not examinable.

Today's Class

We most of the class talking about Chapter 15, and in particular radioactive decay.

We simulated such decays by having part of the class flip coins. We discussed whether of not coin flips were truly random, and Quantum Theory's statement that radioactive decays really are completely random.

As part of the discussion I asked a couple of questions. The questions and your answers are availabe in pdf form via the link to the right.
We also showed this Flash animation of radioactive decay.
We extended our discussion by talking about the famous Schrödinger's Cat paradox. Course Notes on this are available.
