Saving Files

You can save f iles on your local lab PC in the 'temp' directory. However, these will then be accessible to the next user of that PC, and may be erased. To ensure that your files remain available to you, log on to Faraday, and save the files there.

NB! When you are saving data in your Faraday directory, please do NOT save it in the sub-directory unixmenu. Just save it in the directory that bears your login name. Thank you!

Access to your Faraday files from your own computer

The most convenient access to your files on Faraday is by FTP (File Transfer Protocol). For the most basic and clunky access, click on Start on your desktop, type in ftp faraday.physics.utoronto.ca. You will then be prompted for your login. Typing in a ? will give you a list of the commands.

However it is well worth downloading a shareware FTP client from the Web to handle the transfer of files between your computer and Faraday. A good site is http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm. (Another useful site is  http://www.tucows.com.) Choose the WS_FTP LE free shareware version. Run the .exe file that appears on your Desktop to install the FTP client.

Open your FTP client and create a connection to faraday.physics.utoronto.ca. Enter your Faraday username and password (the one that was written on the handout). Use the menu system to find your files and use the arrows to transfer transfer files between Faraday and your home computer.

Data Studio - use it from home!

You can download a version of the DataStudio software that is free for 90 days for student use.

Download the program file from: http://www.pasco.com/software/ . First read the Read me file. Then click on DataStudio Software - Version 1.7.2. Then follow the links, and run the .exe file which will extract and install the software.

When you run the programme, you will be prompted for a licence key and serial number; since you don't have one a version called DataStudio lite will run. This version does not have all the features of the lab version; however if you go to Help you can turn on all of the features for 90 days.

Since you are not plugged in to the interface, and you will get a message saying that the program could not find the Science Workshop interface. Click on Pick and choose the SW750 interface.
