Requirements
You are required to attend all of the six lab sessions in each of the Fall and Spring terms. If you miss a lab for any reason such as illness you must make up the lab at another time agreed on with your demonstrator. There will also be approximately 10 of your Friday morning lectures that will be devoted to lab issues. Attendance at these is not compulsory - though highly recommended! See the Schedule for the Year.
You may do as many or as few "weights" of experiments as you wish, though we expect most students will complete 6 in each term, for a total of 12. The final Experiment Mark (see below) will be composed of the marks for the best 10 of these. The one-weight experiments are designed so that their data-taking stage can be completed within one three-hour period; however, in most cases, this will be true if and only if you have spent some time beforehand in preparation so that you fully understand the purpose and method of approach of the experiment you are about to perform, and, in many cases, can spend some time on the final analysis outside lab hours. The two-weight experiments take twice as long and count as two one-weight experiments with the same mark. Make sure you read the guide sheets beforehand, understand the physics being studied, and answer any Preparatory Questions.
At the beginning of both Fall and Spring term, you will do a couple of required experiments; during the rest of the term you can select experiments from a wide choice of "free choice" experiments. Hard copies of the guide sheets for the required experiments are included in the LABORATORY MANUAL; all others can be downloaded as required from the Experiments section.
HOWEVER, Please Note: You must have your demonstrator’s permission to start any new experiment. Such permission will not normally be given until you have completely finished the previous experiment.
NB Extensions of time are granted only in the case of death.

A major part of your lab mark will reflect the quality and quantity of work (with quality being of prime importance) which you have accomplished during the scheduled lab session under your demonstrator's supervision. Your final lab mark will be evaluated as follows:
