Help for Instrument Specifications

This is the help for the Instrument Specifications facility.

Note: If you were in the middle of a search, use your browser's Back button (once or more) to return to the search.

If you are using the UPSCALE default browser, you will not wish to print a specification sheet that contains a table.

How to find specifications for an instrument

When you enter the Instrument Specifications section, you are asked for a string to search for. This will be searched against the model number (such as PM9244), the manufacturer (such as Wavetek), the instrument type (such as oscillator), and keywords (such as radiation). There is also an option to list all instruments in the database.

If you enter more than one word as your search string, the instrument database will be searched for anything that contains all of the words you entered. The Clear field button erases anything you may have typed in the search window, while the Search button initiates the search.

If there was only one instrument that matched your search, you will be shown its specifications sheet right away. If your search found more than one instrument, you will see a new page with a list of the matching instruments. Clicking on any instrument in the list will give you its specifications sheet. At the top of the page is a list of the words you searched for, and how many hits (matches) there were. There is also space for you to enter something to search for in the list of instruments on that page. If you want to start the search from scratch (ie. search on the entire instruments database), use the Click here to start fresh search button.

If there are no matches for your search, a page will come up telling you that. Either use your browser's Back button to go back to the previous list and change your search string (you might have mispelled something) or try starting a fresh search (you might have been searching on a more restricted list than you thought).

How to read the specifications sheets

The specifications sheets consist of up to 6 parts. At the top is a table of contents which can be used to jump directly to the other parts of the document, or to the I Year Lab or UPSCALE home pages. Below that is the basic information about the instrument: what it is, possibly a picture of it, its manufacturer, model, and possibly cost.

Next is a short description of what the instrument is and does, followed by a listing of all relevant specifications for the instrument, usually in the form of a table. If applicable, there may be a section with step-by-step operating instructions, and possibly any warnings or precautions about using the instrument.

Finally at the bottom are keywords associated with the instrument. These are the same keywords that are used when you search for an instrument. They may also give you an idea of alternative uses for the instrument.
