PHY100S - The Magic of Physics - Class 11 - Monday February 13, 2006

Special Topic: Chaos

Shortly after Reading Week we will be discussing a topic that is not covered in the textbook: chaos. There are course notes available on this.

There is an issue about the appropriate format for such course notes.

Most but not all people read this kind of material best in hardcopy. For this, pdf format is a good choice. Html is not a good choice since I have no control over page breaks etc. Particularly for documents with large tables, figures, etc., these problems can be so severe that portions of the hardcopy are literally unreadable.

Some people, particularly those with good working memories, can effectively read these sort of notes on a screen. In this case html format is a good choice.

Here are links to the course notes in both html and pdf. Each will appear in a separate window.

Announcement

By Monday's class on February 27, the first class after Reading Week, please read Chapter 11 of the text. There will be a Pre-Class Quiz on Chapter 11 at the beginning of class on Feb. 27.

Reminder

Many of you will not write the test this Wednesday in our classroom. See the Test and Final Exam sub-section of the course home page for the test locations.

Flash Animation

I have written a Flash animation on Relativistic Time Dilation, which talks about the effect in a way very similar to the way we did it in class. It is available via the button to the right. flash animation

Oops!

In Slide 8 of the PowerPoint on the Second Law of Thermodynamics used in today's review for the test, I garbled the first form of the law. It has been corrected.
